VITEMA encourages residents to start preparing their families and property now for the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Get an emergency supply kit, make a disaster plan, and stay informed about hazards that may impact our area.

National Hurricane Center : Tropical Depression Two Forms in the Atlantic TD 2 Expected to Weaken to a Remnant Low by Thursday

According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Depression Two has formed approximately 1,205 miles from the Lesser Antilles. However, the system is forecasted to weaken by Thursday. At 5 p.m. the center of Tropical Depression Two was located near latitude 11.6 degrees north and longitude 43.8 degrees west and moving west near 16 miles per hour. This general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

National Hurricane Center Designates Area of Low Pressure as Invest 92L

The National Weather Service (NWS) – National Hurricane Center at Miami, Fla., earlier today, designated an area of low pressure slowly organizing in the Atlantic as Invest 92 L. According to the National Hurricane Center’s 11 a.m. Special Outlook report, shower activity associated with a small area of low pressure located about midway between the Cape Verde Islands and the Lesser Antilles has increased a little during the past few hours.

Department of Health, St. Croix Rescue, VITEMA Partner to Offer Community Emergency Response Team Training to St. Croix Residents
The VI Department of Health and St. Croix Rescue, in partnership with the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA), is offering disaster response training for residents on the island of St. Croix. During the months of April and May, Health, Rescue and VITEMA will conduct three Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes.

VITEMA Recognizes April as National 9-1-1 Education Month
Throughout April, VITEMA’s Emergency Communications Centers (ECC) staff will visit classrooms to teach elementary school-age children the basics of using 9-1-1 and about first responders who may arrive at the scene to help. Last year, the “9-1-1 for Kids” program reached more than 200 students between St. Croix and St. Thomas.
