Unified Command Dispatches Joint Assessment Team to Investigate Foul Odor

The Unified Command has dispatched a Joint Assessment Team to the Kingshill area, including to the St. Croix Central High School, to conduct real-time air monitoring after the Command received reports of a foul odor affecting individuals.

The team is comprised of staff for the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, Department of Health, VI Fire Service-HAZMAT Unit, and the VI National Guard’s 23rd Civil Support Team.

At about 1:30 p.m. today, the Department of Education reported that a large number of students and faculty and staff at the St. Croix Central High School have reported ill from a foul odor permeating the air. As of 2:15 p.m. a total of 77 individuals at St. Croix Central High School had reported feeling ill.

The Department of Health is urging residents and other individuals in the area, especially those with compromised immune systems, to stay indoors as much as possible, to close windows and use a fan, and to seek medical care if they feel ill as a result of the strong odor. If possible individuals affected by the strong odor should move away from the area.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
