The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) is continuing to closely monitor a large tropical wave in the Atlantic, located about 900 miles east of the Windward Islands.
Reports from the National Hurricane Center indicate that showers and thunderstorms associated with the large tropical wave are gradually becoming better organized. Surface pressures remain low in the area, and environmental conditions appear favorable for a tropical depression to form over the next couple of days. This system has a high chance, 70 percent, of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours as it moves west-northwestward at 15 to 20 miles per hour.

VITEMA has placed its Emergency Operations Centers on alert, as it continues to monitor the system’s development. The public is urged to stay informed and to begin assessing preparedness in the event a storm impacts the Territory.
“We continue to urge individuals, families and businesses to closely monitor reports on the tropical wave and to begin to look at how well prepared they are if a storm were impact this area,” Lewis said. “Everyone should have an emergency plan for staying in contact with family in the event of a disaster and an emergency supply kit with essential items to last for a minimum of three days. Businesses should be reviewing their emergency plans.”
