National Weather Service Extends the Flash Flood Warning to Midnight

Residents Should be Prepared to Move Quickly to Higher Ground

The National Weather Service has extended the Flash Flood Warning for St. Croix to 12 a.m. tonight. The Doppler radar indicates that moderate to heavy showers are continuing to move across the island.

This rainfall, in addition to the rainfall that has already occurred, will continue to result in flooding of guts and roadways across St Croix. Residents in flood prone areas should be prepared to move to higher ground and never try to cross a flooded roadway.

VITEMA joins the National Weather Service in advising residents to be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. If flash flooding is observed, act quickly and move to higher ground to escape flood waters.

Do not stay in areas subject to flooding when water begins rising. Do not attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes. It only takes a few inches of swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.

Look for advisory updates via VI Alert, NOAA weather radio, or local TV, radio or cable television.

Visit www.VITEMA.gov for more information on preparedness for flooding and other events.
