Virgin Islands Under Flash Flood Watch Through Saturday Afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the entire Virgin Islands which will remain in effect through Saturday afternoon. A flash flood watch means that conditions are favorable for heavy rain which may lead to flooding.

A strong tropical wave moving across the region has the potential to continue producing heavy rainfall, particularly over the southeast half of St. Croix and St. Thomas. Gut-flooding is expected in St. Croix and some low lying areas will be flooded, according to the National Weather Service.

Earlier today, as the system dumped heavy rains on the island, the National Weather Service also issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for St. Croix which remains in effect through 5:45 p.m. this evening. Approximately 1 to 3 inches of rain was anticipated for the island.

VITEMA joins the National Weather Service in encouraging residents to take precautionary/ preparedness actions, to keep informed and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a flash flood warning is issued. People should continue to be aware of the possibility for heavy rainfall.

Motorists are advised to use extreme caution and avoid low lying areas and to be careful when approaching dips in roadways. Pooled water may be deeper than it appears. The heavy rain could also cause mudslides in areas of steep terrain.

Look for advisory updates via VI Alert, NOAA weather radio, or local TV, radio or cable television.

Visit www.VITEMA.gov for more information on preparedness for flooding and other events.
