National Weather Service Issues Flash Flood Watch for the Virgin Islands In Effect Sunday Morning to Monday Afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico which will go in effect on Sunday morning and remain in effect until Monday afternoon. A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for heavy rain across the watch area which may lead to flooding.

At about 2 p.m. today, the large tropical wave was located 650 miles east southeast of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and was moving westward to west- northwestward at about 20 miles per hour. Rain bands associated with this large wave will generate heavy rains and strong gusty winds and, according to the National Weather Service, rainfall amounts between 4 to 6 inches are anticipated with this wave passage, with locally higher amounts in isolated areas.

VITEMA joins the National Weather Service in encouraging residents in the check your preparedness requirements, to stay informed and to be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a flash flood warning is issued. Avoid low lying areas and be careful when approaching dips or spots with pooled water along roadways. The heavy rain could also cause mudslides in areas of steep terrain.

Stay tuned to local radio, TV, NOAA weather radio and VI Alert for updated information and possible warnings. For more preparedness information visit www.VITEMA.gov
