National Weather Service: Tropical Storm Katia to
Track Well North of the Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency is tracking Tropical Storm Katia, which is forecasted to become a hurricane sometime today.

At 11 a.m. today, Tropical Storm Katia was located near 14.2 N Longitude and 40.8 W Latitude — about 1,600 southeast of the Territory — and moving west-northwest near 21 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 85 miles from the center. The system is expected to eventually slow its forward speed over the next few days and to continue to strengthen.

According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Katia is forecasted to pass just over 400 miles northeast of the Virgin Islands on Sunday. No significant impact is anticipated, however, meteorologists are forecasting that the Territory may experience high surf conditions with this weather system.

“If the weather system continues on this track, we expect the National Weather Service may issue advisories for small crafts as the storm nears the Territory,” VITEMA Director Elton Lewis said. “We’re urging beach goers and mariners closely monitor this system throughout the week and during the weekend and to heed all advisories.”

VITEMA will continue to update the public as more information becomes available.
