Safari Carrying 13 Passengers Veers Off the Road on Valdemar A. Hill Sr. Drive

Thirteen passengers riding on a safari taxi van were injured Friday morning when at 9:23 a.m. the vehicle veered off the road, careened down a private driveway and over an embankment near Beacon Point, a tourist attraction on Valdemar A. Hill Sr. Drive. The injured are all passengers on board the Serenade of the Seas cruise ship.

Preliminary reports from the scene indicate that two of the passengers were badly injured and the remaining 11 received minor injuries. All were transported to Schneider Regional Medical Center for medical evaluation and treatment.

Multiple V.I. government and volunteer agencies responded the accident. Emergency Medical Services, St. Thomas Rescue, the Police Department and VITEMA responded to the scene to manage and coordinate efforts. The Departments of Property and Procurement and Public Works were also activated to provide on-scene logistical support. 

Presently, the Department of Tourism is working with both Schneider Medical Regional Center and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line officials to ensure the visitors receive any assistance they may require.

The Virgin Islands Police Department and the V.I. Taxicab Commission are investigating the cause of and circumstances surrounding the accident.
