Hurricane Earl Recovery Update - September 1, 2010

With considerable progress made in the restoration of power and the clearing of roadways, Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. and Lt. Governor Gregory R. Francis are announcing the official opening of public schools territorywide on Thursday and the lifting of the nightly curfew in the St. Thomas-St. John district, which was imposed as a public safety measure in the aftermath of Hurricane Earl.

Based on assessments and reports from the leadership of Department of Education and the V.I. Water and Power Authority, power has been restored at all of the territory’s public schools, flooded classrooms have cleared of water and cleaned and a majority of the hurricane debris have been cleared from school grounds. Public schools territorywide are now ready to receive students.

The department’s school lunch program and bus transportation services will also resume as of Thursday.

The V.I. Water and Power Authority is continuing its efforts to restore remaining are without energy, according to WAPA Executive Director Hugo Hodge Jr.

According to WAPA’s assessment of restoration efforts, as of Wednesday afternoon on St. John, restoration is 95 percent complete with all schools and government offices fully energized.

On St. Croix about 85 percent of the feeders have been restored. Line crews continued to work across the island in areas including; William’s Delight, Gove Place, Carambola, Canaan Ridge, King’s Hill, Judith’s Fancy, Rattan, Questa Verde, Smithfield, Two Williams, Whim, Estate Welcome, Christiansted Town, Boetzberg, Cotton Valley, Five Corners, Mon Bijou and La Grande Princess. Crews will continue on to other areas of St. Croix until 10 p.m. tonight. Complete restoration is anticipated by Saturday, according to Director Hodge.

On St.Thomas, efforts will continue to restore the outlying areas as outlined in the following chart provided by WAPA:
